The National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) is Finland's official Finnish language test. Here's everything you need to pass it.
YKI (Yleinen kielitutkinto) is Finland's standardised language test run by the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (Karvi). It tests real-world Finnish ability across four skills and is accepted for Finnish citizenship, permanent residence, and many job applications.
For complete beginners. You can introduce yourself, ask basic questions, and understand simple instructions. This level is not required for residency or citizenship but is a good milestone.
Beginner — 20% of the full scaleRequired for Finnish citizenship. You can handle most everyday situations, follow conversations on familiar topics, write simple texts, and understand the main points of news broadcasts.
Intermediate — citizenship thresholdYou can understand complex texts, express yourself fluently, and produce clear, detailed written Finnish on most topics. Often required for professional roles.
Near-native fluency. You can understand virtually everything you read and hear, and express yourself spontaneously and precisely. Required for some university programmes.
Multiple choice and short answer questions. You'll hear conversations, announcements, and news-style clips.
Read texts like notices, articles, and letters. Answer questions to show you understand the main ideas and details.
Write texts like messages, letters, or short essays on given topics. Assessed on vocabulary, grammar, and clarity.
Role plays and monologues. Conducted face-to-face or by phone. Shows you can function in real conversations.
