Many learners know basic Finnish. Many attend language courses. Yet when it's time to speak... they hesitate.
Not because they can't learn. But because confidence comes from using the language—not just studying it.
That's why Surfi was created.
Surfi grew from the experience of SawFinland, a community that has supported thousands of newcomers as they started their lives in Finland.
Over the years, we noticed one message again and again.
That simple sentence became the inspiration behind Surfi. Not to replace traditional language schools. Not to compete with them. But to help learners build the confidence to start speaking Finnish in everyday life.

One of the things we admire about Finland is its tradition of using friendly nicknames and simple everyday words. Inspired by that spirit, we created Surfi — a Finnish-inspired name born from Survival Finnish.
For us, Surfi is more than a name. It represents every newcomer taking their first steps towards speaking Finnish with confidence and feeling at home in Finland.
The swan in the Surfi logo was chosen for a special reason.
The Whooper Swan (Laulujoutsen) is Finland's national bird and is recognised as a symbol of Finland's beautiful nature, freedom and new beginnings.
For Surfi, the swan represents every learner beginning a new journey. Just as the swan travels gracefully across Finland's lakes and skies, every learner moves forward with confidence, one conversation at a time.
