Speak clearly and confidently. Master the unique sounds of Finnish, from vowel harmony and double letters to the unmistakable rolling R. Listen, speak, and repeat.
Finnish is a highly phonetic language. Unlike English, where the letter "A" can be pronounced in five different ways (cat, cake, call, car, raw), in Finnish, a letter always makes the exact same sound.
If you see an "A", it always sounds like the "a" in car. If you see an "I", it always sounds like the "ee" in see. Once you learn the basic sounds of the alphabet, you can accurately read any Finnish word aloud, even if you do not know what it means.
Vowels are the heart of the Finnish language. You must articulate them clearly, without blending them into the consonants.
Finnish words have a strict rule called vowel harmony. The vowels are divided into three groups:
A single Finnish word can never contain both Front vowels and Back vowels. Neutral vowels can mix with either group. This is why endings change depending on the word.
In Finnish, length changes meaning. A double vowel is held for twice as long as a single vowel. A double consonant means you hold the sound or pause slightly before releasing it.
In Finnish, the primary stress always falls on the first syllable of the word, no matter how long the word is. This gives spoken Finnish a very distinct, steady rhythm.
Even if a word has a long double vowel at the end, the stress stays at the beginning. Beginners often accidentally stress the double vowel, which sounds unnatural.
The Rolling R: The Finnish "R" is an alveolar trill. The tip of your tongue vibrates against the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. It takes practice, but do not force it too hard.
The Soft J: The Finnish "J" is never pronounced like the English "J" in jump. It always sounds like the English "Y" in yes.
Reading about pronunciation is only the first step. To truly master Finnish sounds, you must listen to native speakers and train your mouth to repeat the rhythms.
