The National Certificate of Language Proficiency, commonly known as the YKI test, is Finland's official language examination for adults. It measures your practical ability to function in everyday situations.
Many immigrants take the YKI test because passing it at the required level is one of the main ways to prove your language skills when applying for Finnish citizenship. It is also widely recognised by employers and educational institutions across Finland.

When you register for the YKI test, you must choose one of three levels. You cannot take a general test and see what level you get; you must apply for the specific level you want to pass.
For complete beginners who can handle very simple, routine exchanges.
The most popular level. Grade 3 is the minimum requirement for Finnish citizenship.
For highly proficient speakers, often required for demanding professional roles or university.
Every YKI test is divided into four separate subtests. You receive a specific grade for each area, which means you can pass some parts of the test and fail others.
To meet the citizenship language requirement using the intermediate test, you do not necessarily need to pass all four sections. According to the Finnish Immigration Service, you must pass at least one oral subtest and one written subtest at grade 3 or 4.
YKI tests are held in person at test centres across Finland. Registration usually opens about two months before the test date. You must be quick, as places for the intermediate Finnish test often fill up on the first day of registration.
After taking the test, you will need to be patient. It takes approximately two months for the examiners to grade the tests and post the official certificate to your home address.
Because the YKI test measures practical language skills, the best way to prepare is to use Finnish in your daily life. Listen to Finnish radio, read easy-Finnish news, and speak as much as possible.
