Lauantaiaamuna Leo menee Kauppatorille. Hän odottaa lauttaa, joka vie matkustajat Suomenlinnaan. Merimatka on lyhyt, mutta Leo katsoo koko ajan Helsingin keskustaa ja saaria. Kun lautta saapuu, hän sanoo: “Tämä ei tunnu tavalliselta bussimatkalta.”

On Saturday morning, Leo goes to Market Square. He waits for a ferry that takes passengers to Suomenlinna. The sea journey is short, but Leo watches Helsinki city centre and the islands the whole time. When the ferry arrives, he says: “This does not feel like an ordinary bus journey.”

Suomenlinnassa Leo kävelee Kustaanmiekan muureilla ja lukee opasteita. Linnoitus on rakennettu puolustusta varten, ja vanhat kivimuurit kertovat pitkästä historiasta. Hän näkee myös kuivatelakan, jossa korjataan perinteisiä laivoja. Leo käy museossa, juo kahvia ja kuuntelee, kun lokit lentävät meren yllä.

In Suomenlinna, Leo walks on the walls of Kustaanmiekka and reads the information signs. The fortress was built for defence, and the old stone walls tell a long history. He also sees the dry dock, where traditional ships are repaired. Leo visits a museum, drinks coffee, and listens as seagulls fly above the sea.

Iltapäivällä Leo huomaa, että Suomenlinna ei ole vain nähtävyys. Siellä on koteja, koulu, kirjasto, ravintoloita ja tapahtumia. Ihmiset tulevat ja menevät lautalla joka päivä. Ennen kuin Leo palaa Helsinkiin, hän istuu rannalla ja sanoo: “Suomenlinna on vanha linnoitus, mutta se on myös elävä kaupunginosa.”

In the afternoon, Leo notices that Suomenlinna is not only a sight to see. There are homes, a school, a library, restaurants and events. People come and go by ferry every day. Before Leo returns to Helsinki, he sits by the shore and says: “Suomenlinna is an old fortress, but it is also a living city district.”
