The story
A fictional student’s first day in Tampere, based around real city geography and the practical learning culture of a university of applied sciences.
Mira muuttaa Tampereelle opiskelemaan. Hän tietää, että Tampere on Suomen kolmanneksi suurin kaupunki. Siellä asuu yli 260 000 ihmistä. Silti Mira kuulee usein lauseen: “Tampere on pieni kaupunki suuren kaupungin sisällä.” Ensimmäisenä aamuna hän ottaa raitiovaunun keskustaan.
Mira moves to Tampere to study. She knows that Tampere is Finland’s third-largest city. More than 260,000 people live there. Still, Mira often hears the sentence: “Tampere is a small city inside a large city.” On her first morning, she takes the tram to the city centre.
In the city centre, Mira walks beside the Tammerkoski rapids. The rapids connect two lakes: Lake Näsijärvi in the north and Lake Pyhäjärvi in the south. She sees old red-brick buildings in the Finlayson area and stops for coffee. Mira thinks that the city looks both industrial and close to nature.
Iltapäivällä Mira menee Tampereen ammattikorkeakouluun, eli TAMKiin. Hän opiskelee käytännöllisessä korkeakoulussa, jossa opintoja tehdään työelämää varten. Tutor-opiskelija näyttää hänelle kampusta ja sanoo: “Täällä voit kysyä rohkeasti apua.” Päivän lopussa Mira suunnittelee viikonloppua: ehkä Pyynikin näkötorni, kauppahalli tai järvenranta.
In the afternoon, Mira goes to Tampere University of Applied Sciences, or TAMK. She studies at a practical higher-education institution where studies are completed for working life. A student tutor shows her the campus and says: “Here you can bravely ask for help.” At the end of the day, Mira plans the weekend: perhaps the Pyynikki Observation Tower, Market Hall or the lakeshore.
Student life note: Tampere has both Tampere University and TAMK. TAMK is a university of applied sciences, where higher education has a practical, working-life orientation. Check each institution’s official pages for programmes, admissions and current campus information.
